A dedicated three-day mini-con for The Napoleonic Wars looms on the horizon at Marriott's Hunt Valley Inn October 22nd-24th in Hunt Valley, MD. Both 2- and 5-player events will be held with special wood up for grabs and no less than four of the enlarged mapboard sets with miniatures will be in use. Designer Mark McLaughlin will also have an enlarged display copy of Wellington on hand and Don Greenwood will reveal the new expansion card sets for the main game.

Special Group room rates are available until September 22nd. Make your reservation today! Check out the details at http://www.boardgamers.org/specific/waterloo.htm.

2005 BOARDGAMING PRE-CONS:

A number of century events are being considered for Pre-Con status in the weekend/days before WBC 2005 to free up schedules later in the week during WBC. Since the available slots for such moves will probably be limited to four, not all will be chosen. The likelihood of sufficient attendance will be a crucial factor in deciding which events are selected. So, take a moment now to email doncon99@toad.net with your preferences IF you would be likely to attend a 2005 pre-con for:

  • Age of Renaissance
  • ASL
  • Axis & Allies
  • Empire Builder
  • Hannibal
  • Paths of Glory
  • Victory in the Pacific
  • Wilderness War

EURO QUEST II:

The second Euro Quest convention (Nov 11th-14th at Days Hotel in Timonium, MD) is just six weeks away. Alhambra, Goa and Ticket to Ride have been added as feature events for 2004. The popular Wild Card tournament featuring open play in 15 different games includes new additions Attika, Lord of the Rings; the Confrontation, Maharaja, Modern Art, Power Grid, St Petersburg, and San Juan among others.

GM volunteers are needed. Check out the recently updated http://euroquest.gamesclubofmd.org/ for details.

PASSACANTANDO WINS BKN:

Connecticut yankee Bruno Passacantando's Germans held onto Caen in the closing days to defeat Pittsburg's Henry Jones to win BPA's 3rd PBeM Breakout Normandy tournament in five rounds over a field of 48 players. Don Greenwood took third by falling to eliminator Tom Dworschak's Allies who thus prevented a 6th round. The other laurel winners were Ken Nied in 4th, Jim Eliason 5th, and Tom Drueding 6th. Check tournament details at http://www.boardgamers.org/specific/bknpbem.htm.

MULL TOP SUCCESSOR:

Coloradan Rob Mull survived four rounds to claim the BPA's 1st Successors PBeM tournament over a field of 24. Henry Rice of New Mexico, who was the only player to win all three of his preliminary games, took second and was followed in the laurel list by Stefan Mecay, Jim Gutt, Matt Ellison and Risto Marjomaa. More details will be posted on the Successors results page at the WBC site.

VIP PBeM Update:

28 cardboard admirals have been sunk. Only four remain afloat in the BPA Victory in the Pacific PBeM single-elimination tournament. Only one of the top ten seeds remains -- Tim Tow (#7). In fact, Tim was the only member of the top half to survive the quarter-final. After a round where the USN was on top 6-2, the IJN came roaring back to take the quarter-final round 4-0. In the semi-final, Tim faces Rob Flowers while Mike Ussery plays Darren Kilfara. Check the action at http://www.gameaholics.com/vitp_tournament.htm!

TRC PBeM Update:

Defending PBeM champ Gary Dickson (CA), runner-up Pat Flory (CT), reigning WBC champ Tom Gregorio (PA), and Michael Pacheco (CA) have reached the semi-finals of BPA's 5th PBeM Russian Campaign tournament after three rounds. They defeated Roy Walker (UK), Rob McCracken (DE), Jim Eliason (IA), and Dave Ketchum (FL) in the quarter finals respectively. Two of the latter group will earn laurels for 5th and 6th place finishes depending on the outcome of the final two rounds.

HAMMER OF THE SCOTS PBeM:

The creation of a couple of websites to handle play of Hammer of the Scots allows players to experience the fog of war that is so important to the block game genre. A swiss tourney using the Braveheart scenario begins October 1st. Players are encouraged to play on either the F2F Gaming or Above the Fields websites. F2F has agreed to allow players to play in the tourney at no charge. Check out the website at www.geocities.com/firstbse19/hospbem.html

All BPA PBeM tournaments require current BPA membership when the event starts. Associate Calendar year memberships enabling play in all PBeM events starting in that year cost only $10 and earn discounts for admission to all BPA gaming conferences. You need not keep your membership current in order to finish a PBeM event. Players may join the BPA throughout the year, but fees for Sustaining and Family memberships which include free admission to WBC are now at the 2004 rates. Members are reminded they can upgrade their current memberships at any time by remitting the additional funds. See http://www.boardgamers.org/bpaterms.htm for details.
