The Cavalry On The Plains

The 24th annual National Assembly of the Order of the Indian Wars will be held in Kansas City August 22-24, with a schedule of speakers and tours focusing on "The Cavalry On The Plains," according to an announcement from National Chairman Jerry L. Russell of Little Rock, Ark. The program will begin Thursday afternoon, August 22, with a presentation by Dr. Michael Hughes of East Central University, Ada, Okla., and editor of The Journal of Indian Wars, on "Conflict on the Santa Fe Trail." Other speakers will include Dr. Jerry Brown, Lansing, Kans., on ""The Indian Wars of Kansas"; LTC (RET) Ed Kennedy, Leavenworth, Kans., on "The Frontier Cavalry"; D.K. Clark, Lansing, Kans., on "The 7th Cavalry in Kansas"; LTC (RET) David Chuber, Leavenworth, Kans., on "Medical Care in the Frontier Cavalry"; and Sandy Barnard, historian and author, Terre Haute, Ind., on "Kansas To The Little Big Horn."

Banquet speakers will include MAJ Peter Panzeri, US Army/Korea, on "The Plains Wars Campaigns and Scenarios"; Rod Thomas, Spanaway, Wash., on "Indian Fighting Doctrine"; and Peggy Vogtsberger, Williamsburg, Va., on "JEB Stuart on the Plains."

On Friday, the group will take motorcoach tours led by Ed Kennedy, Arnold Schofield, and Michael Koury, to Fort Leavenworth and Fort Scott NHS. The Saturday tour, led by Scott Price, David Chuber, and Michael Koury, will be to Fort Riley. The meeting is open to anyone interested in Indian Wars history and/or the frontier cavalry.
