Valley Forge is one of the most hallowed military sites in American history. And now there is a plan being floated to build luxury homes within the boundaries of Valley Forge National Historic Park which is sparking a new battle where George Washington's rag-tag Continental Army spent a miserable winter nearly 225 years ago. Toll Brothers, Inc., the nation's largest builder of luxury homes, wants to build 62 houses on private property ("inholdings") at the park, about 20 miles from Philadelphia. As you can imagine this is causing an outcry from preservationists and park users who say that land is sacred. "Valley Forge is truly a national shrine and one that should be one of America's best national parks, not a park under siege," said Joy Oakes of the National Parks & Conservation Association. Please write your Senators (c/o U.S. Senate, Washington DC 20510) and your Member of Congress (c/o House of Representatives, Washington DC 20515) and urge them to ask the Park Service to do everything they can to fight this proposal. Ask your Senators and your Congressman to also do everything THEY can do to fight this proposal. Pennsylvania folks should also write your Governor (c/o State Capitol, Harrisburg PA 17120) and your Representatives and Senators (c/o same address) and urge them to help fight this encroachment. Valley Forge is sacred ground, and the historic scene MUST be protected from commercial/residential development.
