Robert Krick, 58, chief historian of the Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park is considered the foremost authority on the Army of Northern Virginia, Krick has authored 12 books including Stonewall Jackson at Cedar Mountain, which won three national awards. His latest collection of essays on Jackson's death, entitled, "The Smoothbore Volley that Doomed the Confederacy," will be available in February 2002 from Louisiana University Press. "Few people have done research to the depth and width of Bob Krick," said renowned Civil War historian James I. Robertson, professor of history at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg. "He's a model for young graduate students and established historians alike." Krick retired recently after 31 years as chief historian of the Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park. "His effort at preserving resources here made this park one of the premier Civil War parks in the country," said Sandy Rives, Superintendent of the park. Also, according to Jerry L. Russell "Not enough good things can be said about Bob Krick, and his contributions to the preservation of Civil War battlefields. He was one of the original founders of the Association for the Preservation of Civil War Sites, the first national land trust dedicated to the preservation of Civil War battlefields. He is also, as noted above, an indefatigable researcher and a prolific writer, but it is for his contributions to battlefield preservation that Bob Krick should also be honored and remembered by the Civil War community." In retirement, Krick prdeicted even greater activity. "I'll write twice as many books, and give twice as many talks, and lead twice as many tours."
