The sections in the Infantry Table are Line Infantry (including the Guard Regiment), Provincial militia, the artillery, so-called 'Italian' units (composed of Italians who were not citizens with the exception of Sardinia which was eventually added to the Line), foreign units (German, Swiss and Grisons [2]), and the light infantry Micheletti Sardi.

The parenthetical year is the date the regiment was founded although further battalions were raised at later dates.

** Units that kept swords for all ranks are marked with two asterisks.

* Units marked with an asterisk had vertical pockets with four buttons instead of the horizontal pockets with three buttons worn by most of the units. There were also other Household troops, like Halberdiers, that have been omitted as non-combatants.

The numbers under "Buttons/per side" indicate the button layout on both edges of the coat. For example, 3-3-3 indicates 3 groups of 3 buttons, while single numbers indicate that number of evenly-spaced single buttons. Buttons were in brass or tin matching the lace colour.
