Conventions

By Jim Purky

This issue is a few weeks late due to preparations for the Tenth Annual Seven Years War Association convention, held in South Harvey, Illinois on March 19 and 20, 1993. A doff of the chapeau should go to Brian Vizek, who coordinated the whole show: finding the venue, contacting game judges and an after-dinner speaker, and making banquet arrangements. The SYWA convention has always been my favorite convention, given the combination of fun wargames , friendly people, and good fellowship. It was great to see all of the old familiar faces again and to stay up until the wee hours of Saturday night (actually Sunday morning) telling stories and talking wargaming. Jim Mitchel in particular had a bunch of us in stitches; we were laughing so hard at his tales. These are the types of things that make our association so unique.

I hope that there is enough interest from our members on the East Coast to hold a mini-con at the HISTORICON convention next July 22 - 25, 1993 in Lancaster, PA. The attractions are HISTORICON as well as a return visit to the USA by Christopher Duffy. I need to hear from prospective game judges (we need 9 to 12 games) by April 30, 1993 if we are to get this project off the ground. Rob Chellis, the proprietor of Soldiers & Swords, has volunteered to coordinate things for the convention, so that's a good start. Now we need some men on horseback to ride forth and volunteer to run some games. See page 62 for further details.

Several readers have asked me if I intend to cover the French & Indian Wars in future issues. The answer depends on you, the membership. We need a volunteer to become associate editor for the French & Indian War period. This person will research and write articles, coordinate article submissions from the readers and have a general knowledge of and interest in the F & I War. Members are also encouraged to send in articles as a way of sharing their interest in the topic with the rest of us. On the general subject of article submission, why not get your feet wet by sending in a letter that describes your current SYW interests and activities? I'd be happy to print your responses in our letters section.
