3. The Army of Frederick the Great (Part III) by Phillip Haythornthwaite, Osprey Publishing Ltd., London $11.95. The final volume in this series on the SYW Prussian army focuses on the "Specialist Troops", i.e. artillery, engineers, and light troops in the typical Osprey fashion with 8 color plates, 48 pages and lots of pictures and maps. Available in July 1992

4. WRG Seven Years War Army Lists, by Don McHugh, Wargames Research Group, January 1992, Devizes, $14.99. SYWA member Don McHugh has done a commendable job in putting togeather an army list of all the major, and not so major, powers and armies of the SYW era. This is an excellent compendium of information for the beginner or for someone who has just discovered the period and wants to know what proportion of musketeers, grenadiers, artillery and cavalry to include in his army. I only wish that something like this had been available when I started building SYW armies, for it would have kept me from painting five battalions of Lorraine Grenadiers in my French army. Even "old hands" will find parts of this book useful since it includes army lists for Saxony, Sweden, the Reichsarmee, and Wurttemburg. There are even separate Prussian lists for pre and post-1760 armies that reflect the deteriorating quality of Frederick's army over time--a good idea. This book was given a very harsh review in Miniature Wargames , one that was overly critical in my view because it failed to take in account the fact that the lists are targeted to those gamers who are new to the period or the hobby, rather than to those who already have a deep understanding of the period.

5. The Military Book Exchange, 82 Dean Road, Stoughton, MA 02072 USA. Bruce Weeks was kind enough to send me a copy of his latest listing of new and used military history books. The SYW period is well-represented with copies of Christopher Duffy's The Wild Goose and the Eagle and The Army of Frederick the Great, to name a few titles. Francis Skrine's account of Fontenoy was also on the list along with a copy of the Niemeyer/Ortenburg book about the Brunswick army in the SYW. A large SASE sent to the above address will get you a copy of the latest list.

6. Articles of War, 8806 N. Bronx Avenue, Skokie, IL 60077 USA. Phone (708) 674-7445. Perhaps the best collection of new and used military history books on this side of the "Great Pond" resides at Articles of War. Proprietor, Bob Ruman, always stocks a nice assortment of SYW, Napoleonic, ACW, Colonial and WWII titles and he has a knack for finding all of the German language books related to the SYW. On a recent visit, I picked up a copy of Adolph Menzel and das Heer Freidrichs II von Pruessen for $25.00. This title contains all of the fine Menzel plates that decorate most SYW books on the Austrian and Prussian armies. Bob also stocks individual Knotel color plates for $5.00 each.

7. Historical Gamer Magazine, 1863 S. Limestone , Lexington, KY 40503 USA. Subscriptions (6 issues): $25.00 USA, $30.00 Canada, $36.00 Europe. SYWA member Bill Biles has been publishing a fine color wargaming magazine for nearly two years. Issue No. 12 August 1992 will mark the two year anniversary of the magazine, which features a balanced mix of articles from Ancients to Modern times , reviews of computer wargames, a cartoons and humor page, and classified ads. The articles are generally well written , to the point where I'm often tempted to go out and buy figures to start one of the wargaming periods covered in the articles, such as Marlborough or ECW, etc. The magazine has a hands on style that seems to emphasize gaming as much as history and gives the reader good value for his money. Bill's hard work and fine efforts to promote wargaming deserve your support and attention. Come on now, haul out your check book and send your subscription request to Bill at the address listed above. In return, you will receive a terrific magazine that comes out every other month like clockwork.
