The Battles of Frederick the Great

Book Review

By Potsdam Flags & Publications

Potsdam Flags & Publications in the United Kingdom has recently released a series of booklets entitled The Battles of Frederick the Great. These consist of excerpts from Thomas Carlyle's biography of Frederick the Great. Those who have read Carlyle's massive treatment of Old Fritz will probably agree that the author's idiosyncratic style of writing can often be a distraction. In this series, edited by Cyril Ransome, we get to cut to the chase.

Each booklet covers a particular battle in Frederick's career. The complete set covers the following battles: Mollwitz, Chotusitz, Hohenfriedberg, Sohr, Lobositz, Prague, Kolin, Rossbach, Leuthen, Zomdorf, Hochkirch, Kunersdorf, Leignitz, and Torgau. The four booklets that I was given to review are Mollwitz, Chotusitz, Sohr, and Lobositz. These range in length from twenty to twentyeight pages, depending upon the battle. The format consists of sheets of A4 paper folded and stapled in the middle with colored card stock covers, not unlike the way in which the Seven Years War Association Journal is presented. Each booklet contains a black and white illustration and a map of the battle.

The Price in the U.K. is £2.50. In the U.S. they are $6.00 each. These handy booklets are available from:
