New Looks

Review and Outlook

A New Printer

I've found a new printer for the Journal. I hope that some of the defects of previous issues will no longer be a factor. Also, the new company is able to print my covers as well as the contents.

Concerning This Issue

Although it took me a bit of time to put this issue together, I think there is a little something for everyone. For the academicians among us, we have Professor Iverson's fine article on Voltaire's "war of words" concerning the supremacy of the French language vs. that of the Italian tongue. Jorge Sanchez Galarraga has contributed an excellent article on the siege of Havana. Don McHugh gives us some enlightenment on the Grun Loudon regiment. Mike Edmondson's terrific essay on simulating Seven Years War battle tactics contains a wealth of information that should appeal to the historian and war gamer alike. Finally, we have two more installments of Neil Cogswell's superb Horace St. Paul material.

Membership Directory

At last it is done. You should be receiving this enclosed with your current issue. If anyone's name has been inadvertently left out please let me know so that I may correct this.

A Few Words on the 18th Seven Years War Convention

Once again, we came close to record-breaking attendance at the convention held at the end of March in South Bend. A variety of games were hosted, and Christopher Duffy provided us with another of his terrific lectures before the Saturday night banquet. Member George Rust has decided to initiate the Pour le Merite award to be given each year to the best game presentation. Chris Duffy (left in photo) was selected to pick the first recipient, who was none other than Dean West (pictured in this issue's color supplement receiving the award) for his Final Argument of Kings game. The rules governing this award stipulate that whoever receives it gets his name engraved on a plaque beneath (George had this done) and then must pick someone else to receive the award next year. Kudos for George Rust for initiating such a neat idea!

All the Best.
