1 . Michael Edmondson writes: "I would gladly receive from you any data you might have at hand pertaining to subjects covered in this paper [see his article elsewhere in this issue] on which my information is incomplete, especially: "Anglo-Hanoverian-Hessian infantry marching pace(s) and rate(s) of fire in rounds per in inute "British artillery numbers and barrel weights by per discharge throw weight. "The mix of types of pieces (characterized by throw weight) comprising the position artillery of the French armies in 1757 and later years. (The figures in Kennett are for early 1758 and appear to reflect losses suffered during the retreat from Stade to the Rhine just completed. The table for the 1757 campaign in your own most excellent edition of Dubois provides no breakdown of the '90 pieces' with D'Estrt es or the additional `10 pieces' with Soubise.) "Whether the Prussian march repertoire contained anything corresponding to the 2.67 mph (120 two-foot paces per minute) `double march' used by the French (and the Austrians?) for the making of infantry assaults." "Why Duffy and others speak of the Russian 'pud' as being equal to 40 pounds, when my Webster's Dictionary says 36 pounds, which would dovetail well with the would-be-iron-shot weights shown in Steve Carpenter's table (SYWAJ, Vol. X, No. 2, page 49), assuming stone to have 3/8ths the weight-by-volume of iron, thus:
1/2 pud stone = 18 pounds stone x 8/3 = 48 pounds iron 1/2 pud stone = 9 pounds stone x 8/3 = 24 pounds iron "I would also be interested in tables of organization for the land forces of Spain and Portugal in the mid-18th century." 2. Next Issue: The next issue will feature an in-depth review of Falcon Figures 15mm War of Austrian Succession, Ottoman, and Russo-Swedish War (1790's) as well as an article on the Royal Regiment of Artillery by Mike Partridge, and other articles which space limitations have precluded from this issue.
