This map shows the major political subdivisions of Europe in the year 1740 on the eve of the outbreak of the War of the Austrian Succession. This map was little changed by the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle save for the transfer of Silesia from Austrian control to that of Prussia and the shifting around of some small provinces in northern Italy.
