The Last Thing . . .

Editorial

by David Watkins

A few corrections to start with: In issue 70 of ‘First Empire’, we published a portrait of Captain William Siborne, but due to a mix up, we did not give a correct acknowledgement. The portrait is that by Samuel Lover, R.H.A., is dated around 1833 and was reproduced with the kind permission of Brian Siborne. The photograph was supplied by Bruce Allen Hendricks MPA, F.Ph. of Clearbrook Photographic Arts Inc.

Jemappes Ommission

The text in between the maps on p.8 of FE 77 should have read:

On the far right, defending the village of Jemappes were 7 companies of Grün-Laudon and O’Donnell Freikorps; on the right wing under the command of FML Lilien on the hills south of Jemappes were the Morzin and Barthdeiszky Grenadier Battalions (GM Archduke Charles), two battalions of IR41 (Oberst Kaim), with three squadrons of CR 16 Blankenstein Hussars behind IR41; in the centre under FZM Clerfayt on the hill west of Cuesmes were the Leuven and Pückler Grenadier Battalions, a battalion of Würzburg infantry (GM Mikoviny), and 4 squadrons of CR37 Coburg Dragoons (GM Boros); forming the left wing under FML Beaulieu on the hills south of Bertaimont were two battalions of IR18 and one battalion of IR 17. The village of Cuesmes is the unnamed circle lying between Jemappes and Bertaimont.

George Nafziger on p.161 of Imperial Bayonets (1996) notes that Dampierre's command (bottom of the middle column on p.10 FE77) comprised two legere, four line and four Paris volunteer battalions -- albeit Dampierre says only eight deployed.

Other stuff...

Get writing chaps we need more battle articles and uniform studies. I also want to revive Reader’s Reviews, so whether it be books, figures, wargames rules, write down your thoughts and post / email them in to us, all contributions gratefully received!

Also we are albeit very slowly expanding the subscribers area of www.firstempire.net, there are currently around half a dozen books available to First Empire subscribers at reduced rates. You have to be a subscriber to qualify, other than that only a willingness to part with cash is required.

Enjoy the Summer!
