Waldeck Line Grenadier

1812

by Adrian George, UK

In April 1807 the small Principality of Waldeck joined the Confederation of the Rhine, where upon it soon came under increasing pressure along with other member states to furnish troops to support France.

In 1812 Waldeck provided three companies, which formed part of the 2nd battalion of the 6th Rheinbund regiment, the Principalities of Raus also provided three companies. The illustration is of a member of the Waldeck Grenadier company, of the 2nd battalion during the invasion of Russia.

His uniform is very much influenced by French design, the French style shako has red chords and plume, the usual for Grenadiers. The Fusilier compa- nies were supposed to have yellow chords from 1812, but in all probability many if not all still retained their old white shako chords.

His rucksack and accruements are of the French pattern, and French rank distinctions were also adopted.

Following the disastrous Russian campaign, the few survivors, plus depot troops formed part of the garrison of Danzig in 1813.
