First Empire #71:

Large Cover (slow: 94K)

My latest painting for First Empire shows the famous 'Red' Lancers of Napoleon's Guard at Waterloo. In the illustration the lancers are wearing campaign dress, with the Polish style czapka's largely covered with a protective waterproof. And in most cases the horse's schabraque is tied back to protect it from the rigours of campaigning. Brigaded with the Chassuers of the Guard, the Lancers took part in the first of many unsuccessful massed cavalry charges against Wellington's line. Wavering Brunswick troops took the brunt of the Lancers attack but held firm, a Brunswick shako lies abandoned in the foreground, while in the distance the British 23rd faces the Chassuers.
