A long overdue return...

A Belle Alliance

Dear Editor,

With regard to Gary Cousins' most interesting article, "A Belle Alliance" in FE no. 67, may I suggest he obtain a copy of Siborne's Papers (known as the “Waterloo Correspondence”) from the British Library in London? They can be ordered as a microfilm via the BL's web-site (www.bl.co.uk). I believe that reading this material will cause Mr Cousins to revise much of what he wrote in the article in question. May I also suggest that he also read both volumes of my “1815 - The Waterloo Campaign” as I fear he has missed much of my material?

Once he has done so, my forthcoming book “Wellington’s Smallest Victory - The Story of William Siborne & The Great Waterloo Model,” due from Faber & Faber in 2004, will be close to publication. I suspect that much of the material in that will also cause Mr Cousins to make further amendments to his article. I will then look forward to reading his revisions.

Yours sincerely,
Peter Hofschröer, Gaishorn am See Austria

Editor: I’m sure Garry will be submitting a reply to this in the next issue.

Congratulations . . .

Dave,

Just today I received my copy of FE No.67. May I congratulate you with the high standard you achieved with this one, especially regarding the articles by Gary Cousins (never heard of him!), Roland Kessinger, and Robert Goetz? The latter two I know as very methodical and experienced researchers, which shows in their work!

It seems there was no space left for your “The last thing...”, and no “Dispatches” either ???

Best regards,
Geert van Uythoven, Willemstad, The Netherlands

Editor: Now that Dispatches has regained a slot lets see some letters from you all!

Duelists!

Hello Dave,

Can you please put the following question into the letters page of the next issue please?

In the run up to the battle of Waterloo, two of Napoleon’s foremost commanders viz General Philippe d'Ornano and General Jean-Pierre-Francois Bonet are alleged to have fought a duel in which both were severely injured and as a result could play no part in the hostilities. Can anyone tell me the reason for the duel and who called out whom. I have been trying to obtain this information for some months and have so far drawn a blank.

Many thanks
Terry Senior, Marazon, Cornwall
