1997 International Napoleonic Congress in Italy

The International Napoleonic Society will hold a Napoleonic Congress in Northern Italy in the summer of 1997. Final arrangements are being made for a late June meeting in either Alessandria (near Marengo) or Milan. Final details will be announced later in the Autumn.

The topic of the conference is Europe Discovers Napoleon: 1793-1804. Scholars from around the world will look at Napoleon's rise to power and his early career. They will also discuss what was going on in other countries during this time, and the impact that Napoleon began to have on specific countries and Europe in general. Every aspect of life during this time will be covered: social, political, economic and military.

In addition to the scholarly presentations, there will be opportunities to visit important Napoleonic sites such as Marengo and Lodi, and a number of important Napoleonic museums in Marengo, Milan, Lodi and Parma.

Several scholars have already agreed to participate in this programme, and the organisers are actively seeking additional particpants. If you would like to propose a paper for presentation, or wish additional information, please contact David Markham, 458 Sea Lavender Terrace, West Palm Beach, Florida 33414-3942, USA.

A Tour by the Nelson Society

This takes place on Wednesday 23 April 1997, and will be a tour of south Hertfordshire visiting the memorials to Nelson's men. The date is also the 150th anniversary of the death of Admiral Sir Davidge Gould ( the last of Nelson's Nile captains). Admiral Gould is buried in North Mymms in Hertfordshire, and the society hopes to be able to lay a wreath at his grave during the tour. For more details contact David Shannon, 39 Woodland Mount, Hertford, SG13 7JD.
