Napoleonic Newsdesk

by Paul Chamberlain, Napoleonic Association

The Napoleonic Association is not just about re-enactment. There is a thriving research section that includes a number of Study Groups, with a full programme of conferences held during the year. There are a number of such events planned for the coming months, to which all Napoleonic enthusiasts are welcome, not just Association members. The events are as follows:

Saturday 1st October 1994

Napoleonic Association Autumn Conference at the National Army Museum, Royal Hospital Road, Chelsea, London. The meeting begins at 11.00am in the Lecture Theatre, and the lectures are:

Napoleon on St.Helena by Tim Hicks.

This talk will examine Napoleon's life from the Battle of Waterloo to his death in exile on St.Helena. This fully illustrated presentation will include a study of the retreat from Waterloo; the proposed counter-offensive against Wellington; the abdication; journey to St.Helena; his relationship with Governor Sir Hudson Lowe; his death; and the poisoning theory.

Napoleonic Newsdesk - a brief look at what is happening in the world of Napoleonic research.

In Search of Nelson's Men by Graham Dean of The Nelson Society.

This Society has undertaken a project to discover more about the men who served with Admiral Nelson; where they lived and died after service with the Navy; their medals, paintings and headstones. The talk will present the results of this fascinating project.

Hell Upon Water: The Prison Hulks of England by Paul Chamberlain.

During the Napoleonic wars some 200,000 prisoners of war were brought to this country, many of them being incarcerated in the infamous Prison Ships, or hulks. This is the story of those vessels, and the lives of the prisoners they held, at the depots of Portsmouth, Plymouth and Chatham.

The museum has catering facilities, and admission to both the museum and conference is free. In addition to the lectures, there will be displays of Napoleonic items from the collections of various Association members.

Sunday 27th November 1994

Napoleonic Association Peninsular Study Day, to be held at Winchester College from 10.00am to 5.00pm. The cost to delegates will be £ 25, which includes a buffet lunch.

There will be two lectures by Speakers well-known to students of the Napoleonic era, followed by a visit to the Royal Green Jackets Museum. One Speaker has been confirmed, namely, Ian Fletcher, who will talk on Aspects of the Peninsular War Through the Eyes of a Subaltern.

Sunday 5th February 1995

Napoleonic Fair, organised by Greenhill Books and Gallery Militaire. This exciting event will take place at the Royal National Hotel, Bedford Way, London WC1 (just off the north side of Russell Square). The event in 1994 attracted a large number of traders and displays covering a wide range of Napoleonic activities; including books, wargames, models, antiques, prints and a variety of re-enactors from the period. This is THE Napoleonic event of the year, where there are plenty of people willing to take money from you for all manner of Napoleonic wares! Further details will be published in this magazine nearer the time.

Saturday 25th March 1995 (tentative date)

Napoleonic Association Spring Conference at the National Army Museum. Details to be announced.

April 1995

Partizan Press Napoleonic Weekend at the Tower Armouries, London. Details to be announced. The Napoleonic Association always has a strong research presence at this enjoyable and informative event event.

At all of these meetings can be found members and information about the various Study Groups that have been formed within the Napoleonic Association. These have resulted when a group of members have had a common interest in a particular aspect of the period. They liaise with each other to share resources and help the common research efforts. There is no charge to join, although the Co-ordinators of the Groups do appreciate a contribution towards the postage costs incurred. The Groups publish their own in-house magazines in which their news and sources are presented for the benefit of all members. The Groups in existence are:

    British Light Infantry Study Group
    German States Study Group
    Austrian Study Group
    French Commanders Study Group

There is also a British Militia and Volunteers Group being formed in the very near future. Watch this space for more information. For more details of all these activities of the Napoleonic Association, please contact the secretary.
