38: French Artillery Carriages
During the Seven Years War

M Stephens

What colour was the woodwork and iron work of French artillery pieces during this period? I know that they were painted and bhck respecivley in the C17th and early C18th.

The carriages of de Valliere's design were painted red originally; also the carriages of naval guns were painted red throughout the C 18th.

However, I have seen it said that that land carriages were painted light and dark grey in the Seven Years War. Can anyone supply an authoritative answer to this question?

Indeed, any information on gun colours would be welcome if drawn from other than the usual available sources.
