Q14. Prussian Battalion Guns

from Colin Kendal

The 50th and 51st (Brudenell) foot were regiments from those renumbered in 1757. They wore red waistooarts and breeches. The 50th were faced, lined and lapelled black with black/white lace. The 51st were buff yellow.

The 87th and 8th, Keith's and Campbell's highlanders had a very short career if an effective one. Raised in 1759 they were disbanded in 1763. Sources are few but buff or yellow is quoted as the facing colour which is consistent with the other highland regiments (until the 42nd became a royal regiment and changed to blue).

A German print which is thought to be contemporary and shows Scots in Germany shows men in belted plaids with bonnets with a large black cockade but no feathers or bearskin plume. The bonnet has a red band. The tartan was thought to be similar to the 42nd, i.e. the Government pattern which is what one would expect

Regarding earlier queries on the introduction of the red stripe into this tartan I had always believed that this was originally introduced as a grenadier distinction possibly shared by musicians.
