17. GALLOPER GUNS from Mike Partridge. On page 4 of issue 3 there is an illustration of a galloper gun. Did the British army actually use that style of trail in battle in the mid-eighteenth century? Has anyone any evidence one way or another? 18. SIEGE OF ST. TROPEZ 1716 from Stuart Asquith. Can anyone tell me anything about this siege? I have seen a poster and a model in La Musee de l'Armee in Paris, but so far nothing else. 19. BATTLES OF THE WAR OF THE SPANISH SUCCESSION from Charles S. Grant. Can anyone provide maps of the following battles in the War of the Spanish Succession? 1701 Chiari; 1702 Santa Vittoria; 1702 Luzzara; 1706 Turin; 1710 Almencra; 1710 Villa Viciosa. 20. THE REVOLUTION AND THE JACOBITE RISING from Iain Robertson. My family in 1689 were estate workers for Robertson of Fashally. I know an ancestor fought at Killiecrankie pass for Graham of Claverhouse - would it be possible to get the muster roll of the Jacobite army at that time and also the muster roll of the Royal Scottish Horse abandoned in their barracks in Watford during the Revolution? 21. THE LENGTH OF COLOUR POLES from Stephen Ede-Borrett By the end of the seventeenth century, to judge from contemporary illustrations, the French infantry were widely using the "long" colour pole. (Traditionally introduced into Europe by the Swedes in the 1640s.) Certainly it appears (although not exclusively so) in the engraving of Guerard, as well as the paintings of Laroon and the famed Blenheim Tapestries. The popularity of the new "long" pole was such that by the era of the War of the Austrian Succession and the Seven Years' War (1740-1763) it was in use (at least as far as I've been able to discover) by all regiments of the French army EXCEPT the Gardes Francais. Rigo (Le Plume plate ARI) states categorically that the Gardes Francais were still using the short pole at least as late as 1745. The question is, of course, when did the Gardes Francais change over to the "long" pole - if they ever did - and were any other regiments still using the "shore' at this time?
