Where the War Department
Thought Everyone Was

1 July 1814

by Rich Barbuto

The following is an extract of a document prepared by the War Department which is a snapshot in time. The Secretary of War titled the document "A Report of the Army, its strength and distribution, previous to the 1st of July, 1814." It is clear that the war Department did not have a good handle on actual strengths of its regular regiments because monthly strength returns as well as recruiting returns were notoriously late or never sent. Most likely, actual strengths at the recruiting stations were higher than reported here. Volunteer and militia formations are not illustrated in this report. This document is also useful because it shows which regiments and bodies of recruits were ordered to join either the Right Division or Left Division of the Ninth Military District - the two divisions expected to carry the bulk of the 1814 campaign.
