WWI UC-83 and von Krieg?

by Harry Cooper

VICTOR TURON (28-1984) has this information on UC-83:

1. There was no UC-83. The highest numbered unit in the coastal type U-boats was UC-79. However, the oceanic U-83 was indeed sunk in February 1917.

2, U-83 first success was the sinking of one small Swedish sailing ship (NIORD, 123 GRT) on 17 Dec 1916. Then on 31 Jan 1917 she sailed from Helgoland for patrol in the Atlantic under command of Kapitinleutnant Bruno Hoppe. Between 4 and 7 Feb 1917, she sank four ships:

4 Feb 17 French sailing ship COQUETTE (167 GRT)
4 Feb 17 French sailing ship ANNA MARIA (141 GRT)
6 Feb 17 British steamship CROWN POINT (5,218
GRT) 7 Feb 17 Russian sailing ship DIAZ (63 7 GRT)

On 17 Feb 1917, in a position 51 degrees 34N x 11 degrees 23W, U-83 sighted a lone steamship with Norwegian flag, which she hit with submerged torpedo attack. U-83 surfaced 300 meters from the stricken vessel, which at that moment raised the British battle flag and opened fire with hidden guns. She was in fact the British "Q" trap-ship FARNBOROUGH under Commander Gordon Campbell.

U-83 was hit repeatedly and sank in a few minutes, leaving in the water the Wachoffizier Bonicke and a badly wounded steuermann. Both were rescued by the British vessel, but the steuermann died soon afterwards, There were no other survivors from U-83.

3. There is NO man called von Krieg amongst the 36 men who died with U-83. The three officers killed were:

    Kapitanleutnant Bruno Hoppe
    Mar. Ing. Schmidt
    Oblt. z. See Bleymuller

The petty officers and crewmen were named Bernhardt, Eismann, Erbstein, Eyersheim, Fay, Flosse, Frisch, Frohnert, Galatzki, Graffel, Gunther, Haller, Hildemann, Jahrmarkt, Kirstem, Klaudy, Kobbe, Lambertz, Lenz, Moller, Muhisiepe, Niendorf, Nitschke, Patzold, Nsser, Rudolph, Schmitz, Schumann, Seiler, Wentzel, Wenzlow, Werner and Wolff.
