Edge Casting Call: Miniatures:
by Ken Carpenter
Early this year we saw the release of Silent Death: The Next Millennium, a new and improved edition of the popular space combat game. We scoped it out at the time, mostly looking at the mechanics and playability. Since then, the people at ICE have been busily putting out support material, Rafm has been issuing some really nice figures, and there are a couple of other cool accessories from Geo Hex. I thought you might appreciate a look at some of this new stuff for what is an extremely addictive game. The last three releases have made some significant changes to the game and the environment - new races, ships, and even a new class of ships. The playing field may still be level, but it's sure grown! To go with the new ship designs, Rafm has an assortment of newer releases to look at (all blisters are $5 each, but include varying numbers of ships). The new ships are sculpted by Bob Naismith and are wonderfully detailed. Nightbrood (ICE #7213, $16.00) introduces the Hatchling race, detailing their technology, ships, and weapons. This is one dangerous race with some nasty tricks to pull on the various humanoid races. It comes with a sheet of die-cut counters to represent some of the cool stuff that they can do. If you play Silent Death, Nightbrood is not elective material - you have to get it... if for no other reason, just so you can protect yourself.
Sunrunners (ICE #7211, $12.00) introduces a well-equipped band of mercenaries, left homeless and nomadic since the Hatchling swarms destroyed their homeworlds. The book contains the story behind the Sunrunners as well as their forces/organization, new weapons, ships, and a dozen scenarios involving their units. It's a good read and a must-have for players.
Warhounds (ICE #7212, $14.00) details a new class of ships for SD:TNM... escorts. These behemoths occupy two hexes of the game board and carry as much firepower as most fighter strike forces! Their reduced speeds and maneuverability limit them to some degree, but multiple fields of fire and heavy point defense ensure that they won't become fighter bait. All of the Warhound ships from Rafm are 1 per blister.
