Women's Fashion from the Ancien Regime

Woman in Formal Dress, 1770s

This figure is wearing a robe a l'francaise featuring a low, wide necklimne and a pointed v-shaped bodice. The overskirt opened to reveal a matching underskirt. Both were supported on paniers, or hoops.

This type of elaborate gown was worn only at court and for formal occasions, such as attending the opera.
