Tour of 1812 Invasion of Russia


184th Anniversary Tour of Napoleon's 1812 invasion of Russia and the Battle of Borodino.

Xenephon Group International has announced its itinerary for a historical excursion of Russia this coming August and September. Accomodation in Borodino is in a tent camp. The itinerary may be augmented with visits to military schools, lectures and seminars in military history, films, etc. Those not wishing to stay two days in camp will take an alternate historical tour.

Details known at this point:

  • 20 August-- Depart U.S. by air.
  • 21 August-- Arrive St. Petersburg. Bus tour of city.
  • 22 August-- Tour the artillery museum, fortress of Peter and Paul, and cruiser Aurora.
  • 23 August-- Tour the miltary gallery of 1812, the Winter Palace emphasizing holdings related to 1812, the naval museum, and meet members of the city's military history association.
  • 24 August-- Travel to either Pavlovsk or Pushkin Palace of Catherine II, allowing time for shopping. Depart by night train for Moscow.
  • 25 August-- Bus tour of Moscow including the Kremlin. Stop at Izmailovo for shopping.
  • 26 August-- Tour fortified monasteries in Moscow region and study the city as it was in 1812.
  • 27 August--Tour Borodino Panorama Museum and the recently opened military history museum on Poklonnaya Hill.
  • 28 August-- Tour the Central Museum of the Armed Forces and the "Kutuzov hut" museum and monastery.
  • 29 August-- Tour the Tretyakov picture gallery and special Uniform Museum. Meet Moscow Military Association.
  • 30 August-- Depart for Borodino by bus. Tour Kolotsky monastery, Shevardino, Semenovo Heights, Rayevsky Battery. Dinner at campsite. (For those not wishing to remain in camp and only witness the re-enactment, there is a bus tour to the Smolensk fortifications and 1812 battlefield.)
  • 31 August-- Tour Borodino museum and the monuments to the regiments. Dinner and socializing with re-enactment groups at campsite.
  • 1 September-- Ceremonial liturgy near the central monument of the Rayevsky Battery. Re-enactment of the battle. Dinner at the campsite.
  • 2 September-- Depart for Moscow. Visit the Zvenigorod fortified monastary.
  • 3 September-- Depart for U.S. or depart by bus for Peryaslavl via fortified Trinity-St. Sergius monastery.
  • 4 September-- Bus tour of Suzdal and Vladimir, return to Moscow.
  • 5 September-- Depart for U.S.

The cost for the land portion of the tour in Russia in $1,900, including all accommodations, meals, transportation, etc. Air fare from the U.S. is estimated at $1,000.
