STERLING PUBLISHING COMPANY, 387 Park Avenue South, New York, NY 10016-8810 (FAX 212-213-2495) has released MEDIEVAL WARFARE SOURCE BOOK: Volume I: Warfare in Western Christendom by David Nicolle ($34.95 in hardcover; $49.95 in Canada). This is an beautiful 320-page book with 167 b/w illustrations covering the fifth to the fifteenth centuries beginning with the Roman-Byzantine armies, moving on to Anglo-Saxon England, and ending up in Scandinavia. Included are details of the armies, weapons, strategies, fortifications, and leaders in Europe. Chapters include Barbarian Invasions & the Barbarian States (400-650), Early medieval Europe (650-1100), High Middle Ages (1100- 1275), Late Medieval Europe (1275-1400), Biographies (21), Sources (fascinating section covering fortifications & siege warfare, laws of war & prisoners, military theory & training, morale & motivation, naval warfare, flags/heraldry, arms, arrnour, weapons, firearms, and more), and Miscellanea (covering booty, prisoners, intelligence and espionage, training, taxation and pay, feeding the army, medical services, religion, literature, music, transport, raiding, coastal landings, uniforms and much more). I have never been much interested in this period, but I found this massive effort high interesting and entertaining. A vast amount of information for the wargamer!
