JOURNAL REVIEW:

Vindicator:
The Journal of Metagaming Games
and Classic Science Fiction Wargames

by Kenneth M. Van Pelt

There is a wonderful new gaming magazine available out of New York, devoted to a genre of early microgames published by Metagaming. (Metagaming 1974-1982 +/-). I eagerly anticipated the review of this new product because my early gaming experiences began in the Metagaming Microgame systems. I was sure I would be seeing old friends and coincidentally our editor Michael T. Friend has filled the bill. I have seen volume 1, numbers 1,2, and 3 covering Autumn '95 through Spring '96.

Like a blast from the past, familiar names and games came flooding back. It is time to blow the dust offthe old box of games and magazines from your early days of gaming. The Vindicator has revitalized the following Microgame titles in my collection: Ogre, G.E.V., Chitin 1, Melee and Advanced Melee, Wizard and Advanced Wizard, The Fantasy Trip: In the Labyrinth, Grail Quest, Security Station, and WarpWar.

The purpose of The Vindicator Journal is to justify and support the play value of classic science fiction microgames. If any of the titles I mentioned above, (and there are a lot more that I didn't mention,) are fondly remembered by you, you will no doubt ask yourself, "I used to love playing Melee! I wonder if I still have that copy of Grail Quest on the shelf?" The Vindicator will definitely give you a nostalgic look at some extremely clever game systems - all packed into an 8.5 x 5.25 two column all text layout of 28 pages an issue. I recommend The Vindicator and I hope it finds it's audience of appreciative gamers who had the forethought to hang on to all of those old out-of-print microgames.
