Exploring the Internet

By Graham Empson

David Southall has written to me recently on the results of his exploration of the Internet which I considered well worth passing on: On the Internet recently I have been entering various combinations of wargames/miniature wargames into my websearching system. There is a great deal out there besides "The Miniatures Page" as mentioned in a recent LW, however, it is a great place to start off. 'Command Decision' modern wargame rules has its own page as does the excellent set of 19th Century rules 'Fields of Honour'. The latter has a detailed description of how the rules work and the experiences of various gamers playing with the rules. Needless to say DBA and Fire and Fury are very popular topics of discussion on the web.

For boardgamers, 'Command Magazine' has its own page as do 'The Gamers'. These feature questions and answers, errata and details of up and coming releases among other things. Board gaming companies should take note. Setting up on the Web recognises that boardgaming is not just North American. I will certainly be purchasing from these two companies in the future because of the support they are prepared to give their products on the web. Finally, I followed a lead for a Strategic Simulations interest group and found a web site devoted to the Avalon Hill Napoleonic board game 'Empire in Arms' which featured a full system for playing it solo.

As you can see, PC's are not just games machines. There really is a wealth of information on the Internet about wargaming so maybe its time more of us considered using PC's to help track down research material, rule ideas etc. After all, an information database is only a book or discussion paper stored on magnetic media and distributed electronically. Remember your very own Lone Warrior spends most of its formative life inside various PC's before finally leaping onto the pages you have just read.

David, thanks for this and I would like to inform the membership that we have had our first member "via The Net" in Jon Willacy from Down Under! I know a few members are using The Net and I would be grateful if they could (a) Send me some information on how we advertise the Solo Wargamers' Association on it and (b) be willing to be our "Net Contact". Kenn
