1. Battlefields vol 1 issue 5 available from Caliver Books or On Military Matters, 55 Taylor Terrace, Hopewell, NJ 08525. Well as soon as I opened my big mouth complaining about where it was, last issue, it arrived the day after I mailed #97. While, there are no real colonial articles, the issue is worth reading for its content. "Dien Bien Phu" is on the verge of the colonial period and a good read. Another good read is Paddy Griffiths' "Noli Illigitmos 1799" a Napoleonic naval game scenario. 2. Guernsey Foundry figures, available from Pendragon Miniatures. I receive some sample figures from the latest issue of Seven Years War Prussians figures. I know, not colonial, but if you like the SYW these figures are the best I have seen. The detail is amazing and the price isn't bad either. I also received some more Wild West figures see the review. 3. Lone Warrior #116 US edition, Solo Wargamers Assoc. 1707 Ridge Rd., Leavenworth, KS 66048. Nothing colonial, but the articles are still well worth reading for ideas. 4. On Military Matters, Dennis Shorthouse has a number of colonial period books. One that is very new by Micheal Barthorp The Frontier Ablaze: North-West Frontier 1897-98, $50.00 for 128 pages, includes b/w photos and eight pages of color plates. Seems a hefty price, but will hold my remarks until I see a copy. 5. Stanley tools available in most hardware stores. I found a cutting mat 8 1/2 x 12 inches, other companies make them in larger sizes. This was less than $6 and will save your table top from x-acto knife cuts. Well worth the investment. 6. 1:64 Scale Rule. I got this in a hobbyshop in Virginia. It is perfect for 25mm figures and buildings. A Guernsey Foundry Old West figure measures just under 6 foot and a Prussian at 6'. A Pass of the North Figure measures 5' 6". So you could use it for either manufacturer. But a Redoubt figures measures in at 7'. 7. Redoubt, Miniature Service Center, 1525 Bridge Street #163, Yuba City, California 95993. Nothing colonial but they are still offering a 15% discount on all orders. 8. Tall Ships Books, PO Box 8027, Cedar Rapids, Iowa 52408-8027. Suppliers of new and used books on all periods of naval history and fiction, but mostly modern and Napoleonic. Gee, what a surprise. These folks are wonderful to work with. 9. Miniature Wargames #162. Nothing colonial, but still worth reading. An interesting scenario on the Gurkhas fighting the Japanese in May 1944. #163 while not strictly colonial "The Battle of Ras-alKhaimah, persian Gulf, November 1809" comes close for a scenano. Typical British/Indian forces land and secure a pirate held town. Quite interesting as a scenario, worth the read and a try. 10. Colonial Conquest #12, see Battlefields. Well, shut my mouth again. The whole issue is worth reading. Of particularly good note are two articles: "The Battle of Adwa" by Alexandra Reece and "Burnaby of the Blues and the Battle of Abu Klea" by George Robinson, unless, of course, you are a Zulu War fan then there are lots of articles. I would much rather have seen more about Burnaby than about the battle. Burnaby had more adventures in the British Army then any ten other officers. Could have been a better article. Ms. Reece, on the other hand, deserves a cheer for her Adwa article. Ms. Reece appears to write with quite a bit of authority on the battlefield as she was there in 1995. Takes a good bit of guts to go there. On top of the writing her maps and drawings of the place are enough to construct a terrain model. This, in addition to the Soldiers of the Queen article (see last issue) gives you an outstanding review of the war. 11. Caliver Books and Partizan Press, 816-818 London Road, Leigh-on-Sea, Essex SS9 3NH. A few colonial period books listed including Osprey Men at Arms #301 Boer Wars (1) 1836-1898. If vou live in England, check them out. Otherwise see them at Cold Wars and Historicon at the On Military Matters area. 12. Wargames, Box 278, Route 40 East, Tridelphia, WV 26059-0278. Their list of books includes Osprey's Campaign #45 Mujuba 1881. 13. Games Workshop. I remember mentioning this book before but now that I have a copy, WOW. How to Make Wargames Terrain WOW! Yes, it is geared toward the Warhammer crowd, but, the basics of terrain and building construction is outstandingly presented. Ork houses that are useful for Northern African and India houses as well as Mexican, huts that can be made for West African huts, palm trees, fences, terrain pieces and basic tools and methods. This deal is hard to beat if you need terrain and construction know how at your finger tips. There are also several pages discussing work areas that I found fascinating to read. I am interested in, not the perfect, but a variety of ideas for work and painting areas for my figures. If something you do or have set up is unique, let me know so I can pass it on. 14. MWAN #84 Hal Thinglum, 22554 Pleasant Dr., Richton Pk., IL 60471. The only colonial article this issue "The Battle of Joazoang Plain" should sound extremely familiar as it was in Miniatures Wargames issue 161 and reviewed here last issue. On the whole, this issue is well worth reading if nothing else for letters and some articles and rules. Back to The Heliograph #98 Table of Contents © Copyright 1996 by Richard Brooks.
