Books: Ironclads in Action

1855-1895

By Terry Hooker

Received 3 booklets that are entitled "IRONCLADS IN ACTION 1855 - 1895", by H. W. Wilson, Vols. V, VI AND VII from a total of thirteen volumes, published by PALLAS ARMATA, c/o Gareth Simon, 98 Priory Road, Tonbridge, Kent, TN9 2BP. ENGLAND. Each has 58 pages including some B/W maps, A5 in size, and card covers, sorry don't know the price but worth a letter to find out. It would appear that this work was first published in 1898, the wars that are included cover Latin America (the 3 Vols. that I was sent, the Pacific War, Paraguayan War, Chilean and Brazilian conflicts in the 1890's etc.) and the Crimea, American Civil War, Franco-Prussian, French and British colonial actions (Alexandria, Sfax etc.), Russo-Turkish, Austro-Prussian-Danish wars and more. A good reference and source set of booklets on some little known actions of the l9th century, I liked reading them too.

I have now one of their book lists which in my humble opinion is really good as they are all re-printed titles from the 17th, 18th and l9th centuries, all of these being of a military nature, although the list has not a very big selection of LART's (10 in total including; Foreign Legionaries in the Liberation of Spanish South America by Alfred Hasbrouck in 7 booklets, 492pp., priced at 11.00 pounds) the numerous other works should be of interest to most members who have other military research areas. This company charges only the minimum price for each work as it is run more as part of Mr. Simon's hobby than as a profit based business, I would recommend that a 75p P/O or 2 Int./ Reply Coupons for overseas requests would pay for the postage and book list, please quote our society if writing.
