Editorial

By Terry D. Hooker

This issue will not be like other ones for last night I accidentally pressed the wrong key when trying to duplicate on to another disc the 36 pages which I had already typed in, having arrived at the end of the first disc. As you may have guessed the key that was pressed was "delete" and my five weeks work was lost in 10 seconds. This being the case and how delayed this issue is already, my text will be based entirely on the original articles with-out any additions from me, also my book list of recent arrivals (5 pages) is gone and will not be included at all, while Paul V. Walsh's regular section "Book Watch in the States" was to be missed out through Paul being on vacation in India and Napal.

For the people who sent me items i.e. books and magazines many thanks, alas time dictates what I can, so thanks to Andrew Preziosi, Paul V. Walsh, Alberto del Pino Menck, A. Villalobos Aleman, Charles H. Bogart, M. Dini Bruno, Enrique N. Bergero, Dr. R. L. Scheina, Brian J. Thompson and Rene Chartrand, all of whom helped in this matter. Well I had better get started, the sooner I start the quicker I'll finish, I had planned that it should be with the printers by the 5th December and it is now the 28th November, so here goes.

The only review that I will do is on the latest Osprey title by Rene Chartrand, "The Mexican Adventure 1861 - 1867" (Men at Arms Series No.272), by now most of you will have either already bought it or at least seen it in the book-stores. I did like the data which dealt with the republican army and uniforms, information that will be eagerly used by researchers and wargamers, some of the photographs were new to me too: pages 44, 45 & 46. The coloured illustrations, for me, gave a feel of Mexico that could be utilized by modellers and wargamers, I would think this title would sell quiet well on both sides of the Atlantic. A welcome new work on this most interesting period of Mexican and European history. T.D.H.

It is with regret that I have to inform you of the death of the Society's Honorary Member Detmar H. Finke, who passed away earlier this year. Some of you will have seen his various articles that appeared in the Company of Military Historians Journal, from the 1960's onwards, while others may have read his articles which were published in the 40's on the Colonial Mexican military. I managed to see and speak to him on my visit to Washington last year after knowing of him and his work for some 20 odd years, he will be missed by a good number of people including myself.
