Editorial

The format change of Empires, Eagles & Lions will be a surprise for many readers. The reasons for the change are outlined below.

The survey we have done brought several important points to our attention. Although many of our readers are wargamers and liked the new format with its color pages, many of them deplored the increasing number of nonmilitary subjects and the decrease in the quantity of "hard core" military information in any given issue. Some even expressed displeasure over the numerous illustrations which significantly decreased the available space for printed matters. It is quite true that, on occasion, we lacked the space to publish some military articles.

The basic problem is that the majority of new subscribers are not wargamers but readers interested in the general as well as military history of the period, and who have a limited interest in the deep military studies which have made up the bulk of the content of EE&L.

In complete agreement with our staff, the Emperor's Headquarters has decided to satisfy both wargamers and non-wargamers by splitting EE&L into two magazines, Napoleon and Empires, Eagles & Lions. Napoleon will keep its color and glossy pages while concentrating on more general historical subjects which will still include uniform color plates. All existing subscriptions will be completed with Napoleon magazine. Empires, Eagles & Lions will revert to a less ornate format without color plates, but packed with the in-depth military articles and historical information for the Napoleonic wargamer and military history buffs that has been its traditional content for many years. We are proud to report that our survey shows that the readership has a great appreciation and regard for the objectivity and depth of such articles. To keep receiving the new EE&L, you will need to subscribe specifically to EE&L.

Some readers may not like the changes and the fact that EE&L reverts to a more modest appearance and a quarterly schedule. However, there is little doubt that with a significant increase in the number of military history reader and wargamer subscribers, EE&L will be improved with a color cover and color pages.

Let us not forget that EE&L provides a forum to expose and debate the numerous military problems pertinent to the Wars of the French Revolution and the Empire and that the active participation of the readership is requested.

There will be some interconnection between the two magazines as I will remain the Editor-in-Chief for both of them. For instance, we have an in depth study on French Hussar uniforms that will be published in the next EE&L with no color plates, with an abbreviated version of the study to be published in Napoleon with color plates.
