Book Review:
NAPOLEON CONQUERS AUSTRIA

By James R. Arnold

Jim got his start in writing on military history, providing our readers with dozens of provocative, thought provoking articles, miniature rules, and many scenarios over the years. It is a great pleasure, therefore to see the success he has attained in the field with 10 books published.

It is always a joy to read a serious book by a wargamer as he, perhaps unconciously, provides just the kind of data we gamers want to get out of our historical reading. Jim's book, Napoleon Conquers Austria (NCA) which covers the 1809 campaign for Vienna is the epitome of this kind of writing. The small unit operational details, time-lines and T, O & E details provide all the data needed to recreate the battles with one exception: the maps. The maps in this book are attrocious, I used those from Scott Bowden's fine work, Armies of the Danube. I fault the editor/publisher for that lapse. A must read for every Napoleonic period gamer, NCA is available for $49.95 from Praeger Publishers, 88 Post Road West, Westport CT 06881 or call - with a credit card - 1 800-225-5800 (ISBN: 0-275-94694-0) - DICK BRYANT
