The Vanguard

by Dick Bryant

The holiday season is upon us and yet I find myself already looking forward to the convention season that starts essentially in March. I think that it is that conventions brings one closer to scattered gaming friends and acquaintances just as the holidays brings scattered family and loved ones together once a year - or have I just sampled one too many glasses of Napoleon as I write this. In any case I hope that you all received the Xmas or Hanukah gift of figures you wanted - now paint them up!

GDW

Frank Chadwick has announced that GDW is closing down after 22 1/2 years in business (see story in The Courier Dispatch). It is a sad day to see such a fine company who has been providing great miniatures rules and support to the hobby over the years close its doors. The hobby is too small to well afford it. Frank is a talent that will land on his feet and I am sure we will hear from him often with major contributions to this hobby. Good luck to Frank and all those at GDW.

REPRINTS OF ARTICLES

The staff of The Courier has gathered together articles from the first 50 issues and separated them into booklets by period. These booklets provide an invaluable reference source. Most of these are from issues now out of print and therefore will be of special interest to readers who were not able to fill out their collection.

NEW ARTICLES

The questionnaire in the last issue asked "what ONE article would you like to see in future issues of The Courier" Obviously, many responses were for the usual main-line topics, Napoleonics, ACW Ancients, etc. however there were quite a few unusual requests which I hope to fulfill with your help. If you have some ideas or expertise in these areas, please drop me a line or send in the article - on disk, please. If you don't have them, send for our Author's Notes (a SSAE is required). Some sample requests:

  • DBM Napoleonics
  • A series on Napoleonic satellite states
  • Napoleonic Campaigning
  • Aerial combat
  • The Italian campaigns of the War of Spanish Succession
  • How to form and organize a gaming Club
  • Rules for Wild West
  • Sapper's Report on making Wild West buildings
  • The Battle of Chalons 451 AD
  • A Guide to painting WWII naval ships
  • French Foreign Legion - French Colonial small unit battles
  • WWI/WWII skirmish gaming

COLD WARS

Join The Courier staff at Cold Wars were we and several of our authors will be putting on a series of fun games called "March Madness" as well as the more usual games. See you there!
