Empires, Eagles and Lions is devoted to Napoleonic history and wargaming. Issue 12 is focussed on the Waterloo campaign, with an article on the importance of the Prussia contribution, an argument that the Prussian forces engaged a Waterloo were those not previous engaged at Ligny (or Wavre) and therefore Blucher and Gneisenau practiced economy of force rather than engineering a startling recovery of a defeated army after Ligny, an evaluation of Napoleons performance, and an account of Grouchy's retreat after Wavre and Waterloo. There is a history and uniform description of the Neufchatel battalion and rather a long piece on Pauline Bonaparte, as well as some useful book reviews, reviews of a board game and computer game and a wargame report. 64 pp, color covers $42/6 issues from On Military Matters, 55 Taylor Terrace Hopewell, NJ 08525. Miniature Wargames is a British glossy with plenty of interior color. Issue 146 contains the second part of a history the battle at San Marcial (1813), the second part of an article on fighting an Ancients campaign in Sicily and Syracuse, the third part of an account of Colonial war in Mozambique, a fantasy role-playing scenario, and an account of a tour of WWII battlefields near Moscow. There are also reviews, columns, and letters. Issue 145 was notable for spectacular color photographs of a huge 1: 1200 diorama of the Siege of Toulon built by Rod Langton, and worth seeking out as a back issue for that reason alone. 60 pp, $59.95/12 issues by air from Wargames Inc, Box 278, Rt 40 East, Triadelphia, WV 26059 0278. The Zouave is the magazine of the American Civil War gaming Society. The Summer 1995 issue has two historic scenarios: Cedar Creek for Fire & Fury, and Elkhorn Tavern Johnny Reb. There are suggestions on models, rules, and reference materials for ACW naval gaming, variant movement rates for Fire & Fury, and a comparison of the command structures of the Confederate and Union armies. 28 pp, $14/4 issues from The Zouave, c/o The Command Post, 2057 Alliance-Sebring Rd, Alliance, OH 44601. Battlefleet is published by the Naval Wargames Society U.K. A recent issue had a long article on early destroyers, description of recognition flags and numbers for the ACW Misissippi squadron, a wargame battle report, a modern scenari and a discussion of launching aircraft from catapults and recovering seaplanes. There are also reviews and letters.32 pp, 7.25 surface, 9.25 air /' 4 issues from Dave Sharp, Secretary, 23 Blunts Way, Horsham, West Sussex RH12 2BJ. P.W. Review, a publication generated by the Potomac Wargamers, is the creation of Wally Simon, and bears his indelible mark, even in those articles he tricks others into writing. This is primarily a forum for rules discussion, often provoking thought, sometimes fulmination. The July issue has some notes by Scott Holder on what he was attempting with Pour le Merite, an account of a flintlock and tomahawk skirmish using Nepaltowaktshe., a simlar account of an attempt to play a colonial game with Fields of Honor, then an ECW game using Ironsides, an experimental game set in modern Chechnya, and finally, a humans vs. zombies skirmish. If youre tired of long articles rehashing a well-known battle followed by a short OB and a comment that you should just use your favorite rules, then read this "it'll get your juices flowing again." About 20 pp, published roughly monthly, and subscriptions are available, although Wally wont stoop to printing prices and such. Just write and say you want it.
