King Mpande kaSenzangakhona (left), the half brother of Shaka and Dingane, succeeded to the throne in 1840 and ruled for over 40 years despite internal friction and growing threat from expanding colonial neighbors.

Colonel Anthony Durnford, RE (right), lost the use of his arm in an African rebellion in 1873. In 1879, he commanded a column of black troops during the invasion of Zululand; he was the senior British commander killed at Isandlwana.

Chief Bambatha kaMancinza Zondi (right), who refused to pay taxes to Natal government and provoked a rebellion in 1906. After some initial success, Bambatha fled into Zululand and his forces were trapped and destroyed at the Battle of Mome Gorge. He himself was killed and decapitated.

Prince Dabulamanzi kaMpande (left), the half-brother to King Cetshwayo, who led the Zulu regiments in the attack at Rorke's Drift.
