Scenario 1

"Sir, we'll give them the bayonet."

--Jackson to Bee

HISTORICAL SUMMARY

Just what did Bernard Elliot Bee mean when he said "There is Jackson, standing like a stone wall"? Did he mean it admiringly? As in, "gosh, if only we had stones like that!" Or did he mean it with contempt? As in "Get the stones out Jackson, and help a buddy!" We'll never know.

All we will know is that once Jackson came to the crest of Henry Hill he and his Virginia regiment stopped, and actually lay down. Bee and Evans, meanwhile, were being pushed by federal troops slowly back from Matthews Hill, toward Jackson's position. It looked like the Union would win this first and perhaps last battle of the civil war. But, there was Jackson etc, etc.

When Beauregard arrived shortly after, he arranged various reinforcing elements around Jackson's center. Together they withstood a piecemeal Union assault and then delivered a telling charge of their own.

    *Yes. yes. I know. he's the legendary Jeb Stuart. How could his boys ever be classed as militia? But on this day, they came, they saw, and they skedaddled.

GAME CONDITIONS

Organization on both sides during the chaotic assault of Henry Hill was confused. After sweeping the rebels off Matthews Hill, McDowell paused his disorganized army for more than two hours to dress lines. Add an extra dress line card to the Union deck. Option: instead of adding a dress line card, substitute a command indecision card for a dress line card. Double dog dare you: do both.

Regiments on both sides mingled with those of other brigades. The only units that start in command control are Jackson's Brigade and Sherman's Brigade. Every other unit begins the scenario out of command. Option: The units of Franklin's brigade are out of command the entire game, as are the 49th Va., 7th Ga., and 8th Va.

Beauregard and Jackson should be rated skilled. No other leader on either side should be rated above average. Thus, if you roll anything higher during your army characterization, ignore it.

Jackson was quoted as saying "We will give them the bayonet." Put in place this bayonet rule-hereafter known as The Bayonet Rule-for all scenarios. Troops that affix bayonets may still fire and load. But with bayonets fixed, it will cost 2 pips per unit firing. Also, add +1 for any unit with fixed bayonets during melee resolution.

CSA: For every USA unit that reaches C3 or C4, surrender 1 morale chip;
USA: for every CSA unit that reaches B2 or A3, surrender 1 morale chip
