Star Trek:
Federation Science

By Andy Merritt

Hampton, VA: For the first time in Virginia history an opportunity to "boldly go where no one has gone before" will begin when the Virginia Air & Space Center hosts, Star Trek: Federation Science ™, a national traveling exhibit on display from January 27, 1996, to April 30, 1996.

Star Trek: Federation Science ™ combines real science and technology with the fantastic vision of the future portrayed through the Star Trek ® phenomena. Throughout the 6,000 square foot exhibit, visitors will learn the way scientists do - by experimentation. Visitors will navigate through an asteroid field, program a voice-activated computer, turn into a Klingon, visually beam onto an alien planet and command a starship.

Star Trek: Federation Science ™ also features thematic areas that relate to stations on the USS Enterprise ™, including the Bridge, Engineering, Sickbay and a simulation of the Transporter Room. Visitors will get a close-up look at artifacts, costumes, phasers and life-size alien models actually used in Paramount Pictures' hit TV series, Star Trek: The Next Generation ® and Star Trek ® motion pictures.

Through more than 40 displays, visitors will learn about scientific principles that are expected to challenge scientists in the future, including particle physics, practical astronomy, and living and working in space. The principles behind propulsion systems, medical science and life support are intertwined with basic research areas such as the structure of tile galaxy, orbits, relativity and planetology. The exhibit was designed and built by the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry In Portland, Oregon in conjunction with Paramount Pictures.

Admission to the Center is $6.00 for adults and $4.00 for seniors/military/NASA employees/children. The Virginia Air & Space Center is located at 600 Settlers Landing Road in downtown Hampton which is only 30 minutes from Vlrginia Beach and Williamsburg.
