The Music of Sharpe

With the continual success of the ITV Television series, it was only a matter of time before a soundtrack CD would follow. I purchased this CD from W.H. Smith and took it home with mixed feelings. The dramas had proved highly entertaining (if somewhat and understandably historically incorrect) and the music likewise enjoyable, yet several of the twenty tracks featured have not appeared In any of the programmes.

Despite this, what the CD does have to offer is very good indeed. Original scores include the opening and closing credits as well as "The Forlorn Hope" and "Badajoz" from the "Company" episode. Both are moving and moody pieces which skilfully incorporate the dread and fear which the troops must have endured during the siege. Jon Tam's rendition of "Over The Hills And Far Away" is also worthy of mention, yet listeners expecting the FULL verses sung in every episode will be disappointed as only the best are included.

Also missing are some pieces which I'd have liked to have heard again. What about the quick-paced South Essex march from "Eagle" or Sergeant Hakeswill's menacing theme heard in "Company"?! An unfair criticism maybe, but in my view justified. In spite of this, however, I expect the CD to sell well with fans of the programme and military marches alike.

As regards the missing scores stated above, a second CD has potential, especially after the success of the first, and I await news of one with keen anticipation.
