John Major is worst-paid Prime Minister for 150 years!

According to an article in The Times of 14 November 1995, John Major is the lowest-paid Prime Minister in real terms in more than 150 years. He receives 82,003 pounds for his job, which will rise to 84,217 on January 1 1996. In real terms, so the article reads, his ministers are paid less than half the amount received by those who served in Harold Wilson's first Government 30 years ago. Since then the pay of MP's has lagged behind inflation.

However, the record salary earned by a British Prime Minister goes to (you've guessed it!) the Duke of Wellington. He was paid a salary of 4,022 pounds and an annual 'pension' of 13,168. This is equivalent to 743,000 pounds a year in today's terms.

I will leave you to make your own political comment on this gem of knowledge!
